The Canadian Ministry of the Solicitor General achieves its goals through a Secretariat and four agencies: the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), the National Parole Board (NPB), and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).
Abstract
The Secretariat provides strategic and corporate advice to the Solicitor General and guides overall policy direction for Ministry programs. The RCMP functions as a national police service responsible for protective security and policing services and provides provincial and territorial police services to most regions of the country. Highlights of RCMP activities are described, including identification and forensic laboratory services. The CSC is responsible for the control and custody of all inmates sentenced to at least two years. The service provides a range of program opportunities such as training, employment, counseling, and health care. Paroles and recommendations for pardons are granted through the NPB. Inmates may be released on full parole, day parole, temporary absence, or mandatory supervision. Finally, CSIS investigates suspicious activities related to espionage and assists the government in preparing effective responses. The 1986-1987 resource allocations for each agency is outlined in the report.
