THIS SUMMARY OF THE LONDON METROPOLITAN POLICE COMMISSIONER'S 1977 ANNUAL REPORT STATES THAT DURING THE YEAR THE METROPOLITAN POLICE INCREASED BOTH ARRESTS AND CLEARANCES, DESPITE CRIME INCREASES AND FORCE REDUCTIONS.
Abstract
DURING 1977 THERE WERE 568,952 INDICTABLE CRIMES, AN INCREASE OF 12 PERCENT OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. ROBBERY AND OTHER VIOLENT THEFT INCREASED 23 PERCENT, THE LARGEST INCREASE FOR ANY TYPE OR CRIME. A TOTAL OF 119,817 (21 PERCENT) OF THE CRIMES WERE SOLVED, RESULTING IN 110,353 ARRESTS. ALMOST 30 PERCENT OF THESE ARRESTS WERE OF JUVENILES. TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS RESULTING IN DEATH OR INJURY TOTALED 55,203 A 4 PERCENT INCREASE OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. TWO-WHEELED VEHICLES ACCOUNTED FOR ABOUT 20 PERCENT OF THESE ACCIDENTS. POLICE WERE REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN PUBLIC ORDER AT 585 EVENTS, COMPARED WITH 393 IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR. THERE WERE 191 FEWER POLICE OFFICERS THAN IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR, AND THE FORCE IS STILL SEVERAL THOUSAND BELOW FULL STRENGTH. OVER 8,000 COMPLAINTS WERE MADE AGAINST THE POLICE, OF WHICH 6 PERCENT WERE SUBSTANTIATED. THE REPORT ALSO DISCUSSES BAIL ABUSE, OBSCENE PUBLICATIONS, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, WOMEN POLICE AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE ROYAL COMMISSION ON POLICE PROCEDURE. TABLES ARE INCLUDED. (CFW)
