Abstract
THE TERMS 'MISSION', 'GOAL', 'POLICY', 'OBJECTIVE', 'PROCEDURE', AND 'RULE' ARE DEFINED IN RELATION TO POLICE ADMINISTRATION AND EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF EACH, THE NEED FOR AND USE OF POLICE POLICY ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PUTTING POLICY IN WRITING AND OF COMMUNICATING AND EXPLAINING IT TO THE PUBLIC IS STRESSED, HOW POLICE DEPARTMENTS CAN FORMULATE POLICY GUIDELINES IN DIFFERENT AREAS IS ALSO EXPLAINED. A LIST OF REFERENCES IS PROVIDED. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS COPIES OF POLICE POLICIES IN NINETEEN DIFFERENT AREAS EITHER IN USE OR RECOMMENDED FOR IMPLEMENTATION.
