This policy review symposium considered prison security in England and Wales and the 1995 escape from Parkhurst Prison.
Abstract
Symposium participants discussed deficiencies in prison security, specific steps to improve prison security, and conditions that prevailed at Parkhurst Prison at the time of the escape. In addition, symposium participants made recommendations for improving prison security that concerned the Chief Inspector of Prisons, prison management, inmate and staff morale, and the purpose of imprisonment. Other symposium participants looked at political influences on prison security policies and recommendations, prison security based on inmate classification, the adequacy of correctional staff devoted to prison security, barriers to prison security, and prison-community relations. 58 references, 14 notes, and 1 figure
