INTEGRATED READINGS ON INSURGENCY OFFER AN ANALYTICAL TOOL BASED ON PRINCIPLES LEARNED FROM PAST INSURGENCIES IN TERMS OF FIVE VARIABLES: GOVERNMENT, ENVIRONMENT, POPULAR SUPPORT, ORGANIZATION, AND EXTERNAL SUPPORT.
Abstract
THESE FIVE MAJOR INDEPENDENT VARIABLES CAN BE USED TO EVALUATE THE SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF A PARTICULAR INSURGENCY, WITH SUCCESS DEFINED AS THE ATTAINMENT, OR LIKELIHOOD OF ATTAINMENT OF THE STATED POLITICAL OBJECTIVE. A SECOND PART OF THE BOOK EXPLORES CONTEMPORARY INSURGENCIES IN THAILAND, NORTHERN IRELAND, URUGUAY. GUATEMALA, IRAQI KURDISTAN, AND PORTUGESE AFRICA WHICH INCLUDES ANGOLA, MOZAMBIQUE, AND GUINEA BISSAU. A CONCLUDING SECTION AND APPENDIX EVALUATE THE USE OF THE VARIABLES AND SET FORTH A SCHEME FOR ANALYZING COUNTRY STUDIES: (1) GOVERNMENT RESPONSE INCLUDES EVALUATION OF THE STRENGTH AND ORGANIZATION OF GOVERNMENT COMPARED TO THE INSURGENTS, TECHNIQUES, AND EXTERNAL SUPPORT; (2) POPULAR SUPPORT FOR INSURGENCY MAY BE PASSIVE, ACTIVE, OR ACTIVELY AGAINST; (3) ORGANIZATION IS EXAMINED ACCORDING TO COMPLEXITY, SCOPE, AND UNITY; (4) EXTERNAL SUPPORT INCLUDES MATERIAL AID, SANCTUARIES, AND VARIETIES OF INTANGIBLE SUPPORT; AND (5) ENVIRONMENT INVOLVES EVALUATION OF TERRAIN, CLIMATE, COMMUNICATIONS, AND THE SIZE AND POPULATION OF THE COUNTRY. THE RESULTS OF EVALUATIONS FOR THE INSURGENCIES IN THE COUNTRIES NAMES ARE SUMMARIZED IN THIS SECTION. EXTENSIVE FOOTNOTES AND BIBLIOGRAPHIES ACCOMPANY MOST SECTIONS OF THE BOOK.
