Murder and manslaughter had the lowest offense rate (4 per 100,000 of population). The overall offense rate for recorded crimes (felonies and misdemeanors) was 7,869 crimes per 100,000 population. A table shows the population, number of recorded crimes, rate of increase in recorded crimes compared with the previous year, offense rate, and the rate of increase for the offense rate compared with the previous year for each year from 1971 through 1998. Since 1993, data for the eastern (new) States are included.
