Abstract
The introductory chapter addresses the cultural dynamics of sexual expression, some definitions of "pornography," the importance of pornography as folklore, and pornography as technology. This chapter also has a section on "Pornography, Communication, and Politics." This section examines the perspectives of pornography as supporter of the status quo, as revolutionary, and as a market-driven commodity. The introductory chapter also considers pornography as private fantasy that "trashes" public decorum, the feminist critique of pornography, censors, research on pornography, law and sexual representation, and criminal aspects of pornography. Chapter 2 addresses the history and genres of pornography, including the various media through which pornography is delivered to the user. Chapter 3 traces the chronology of significant events in how pornography is viewed and regulated in America, and another chapter presents biographical sketches of noted figures in controversies over pornography in America. Chapter 5 reviews relevant court decisions, laws and legislation, reports, and the economics of pornography. A chapter presents a directory of organizations involved in the debate over pornography, followed by a chapter that presents an annotated listing of print and nonprint reference materials on pornography. Chapter notes, a glossary, and a subject index
