DESCRIBES THE DEGREE AND CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFERED AT PORTLAND STATE COLLEGE AND RELATED ACTIVITIES OF THE URBAN STUDIES CENTER.
Abstract
THE LAW ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM COMPREHENSIVELY SERVES THE NEEDS OF THOSE ENGAGED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND THOSE WHO WISH TO ENTER THE FIELD. IT ALSO PROVIDES A BASIC INTRODUCTION TO LAW ENFORCEMENT FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN RELATED AREAS OF SOCIAL SERVICE. THE PROGRAM TAKES THREE DIRECTIONS (1) THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM OFFERING A LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION LEADING TO A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN POLITICAL SCIENCE, PSYCHOLOGY, OR SOCIOLOGY, (TWENTY-ONE HOURS OF POLICE COURSES ARE INCLUDED, COMPLETION OF WHICH OFFERS A CERTIFICATE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT); (2) ONGOING RESEARCH IN SUCH FIELDS AS POLICE MANAGEMENT, POLICE AND THE COMMUNITY, AND POLICE TRAINING, (THIS PHASE AIMS AT DEVELOPMENT OF TRAINING RESOURCES, DEMONSTRATIONS OF THE VALUE AND LIMITATIONS OF COMMUNITY ANALYSIS, AND PROVISION OF INFORMATION TO REINFORCE AND IMPROVE PRESENT LAW ENFORCEMENT POLICY AND OPERATIONS) (3) IN THE AREA OF CONTINUING EDUCATION, THE PORTLAND CENTER FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION, UNDER THE STATE SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION, OFFERS A SERIES OF NONCREDIT COURSES FOR SPECIFIC AREAS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. THE CENTER ADVISES AND CONSULTS WITH A VARIETY OF AGENCIES, COMMISSIONS, COMMITTEES AND INDIVIDUALS, BOTH GOVERNMENTAL AND CIVIC, ON MATTERS OF CONCERN TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS AND THE COMMUNITY.
