Abstract
THE WORK BEGINS WITH AN EXPLANATION OF THE METHODOLOGY AND TERMINOLOGY EMPLOYED IN CONDUCTING THE STUDY. A LOOK IS TAKEN AT THE HISTORY OF POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS. DATA REGARDING RECENT AND CURRENT PROGRAMS WERE COLLECTED BY MEANS OF A SURVEY OF THE LITERATURE, PERSONAL INTERVIEWS, GROUP MEETINGS, NON-PARTICIPANT OBSERVATIONS, AND SPECIFIC STUDIES. ALL OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS ENCOUNTERED ARE DESCRIBED AS TO PURPOSE AND FUNCTIONING. CRITERIA FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SUCH PROGRAMS ARE OUTLINED AND EXPLAINED. CERTAIN PROBLEMS COMMONLY FACED BY COMMUNITY RELATIONS UNITS ARE DISCUSSED AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS SUGGESTED. NUMEROUS CRITERIA ARE DEVELOPED AND PRESENTED TO BE USED IN EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS.
