DIFFERING VIEWPOINTS OF THE VARIOUS PALESTINIAN ORGANIZATIONS ARE GIVEN ON PARTICIPATION IN THE GENEVA CONFERENCE AND ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PALESTINIAN STATE.
Abstract
THE SPOKESMAN FOR THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANIZATION (PLO) AND SAIQA URGED THE HALTING OF EGYPT'S PARTICIPATION IN THE GENEVA CONFERENCE; DELAY OF ANY ARAB PARTICIPATION UNTIL A MINIMAL PROGRAM COULD BE AGREED TO; AND THE FORMULATION OF A CLEAR PROGRAM OF ARAB COMMITMENT THAT WOULD OPPOSE THE ENDING OF THE STATE OF BELLIGERENCY OR THAT WOULD PRESERVE THOSE MINIMAL CONDITIONS THAT WOULD ALLOW THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE TO PRESERVE THEIR EXISTENCE, FIGHTING IDENTITY, ABILITY TO PROTECT THEIR CASE, AND CONTINUATION OF THEIR STRUGGLE. OPPOSITION TO THE CONFERENCE WAS STATED BY GEORGE HABASH, OF THE POPULAR FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF PALESTINE (PFLP) WHO SAID THAT EVEN IF THE CONFERENCE ENDED WITH A JUST SETTLEMENT, FROM THE SOVIET VIEWPOINT, IT WOULD NOT BE IN ACCORD WITH THE GOAL OF PALESTINE LIBERATION ADVOCATED BY THE PFLP. THE EL FATAH SPOKESMEN SAID THAT WHILE THE CONFERENCE MIGHT NOT LEAD TO A RETURN OF PALESTINIAN TERRITORY, IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT THE VOICE OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE BE HEARD. A SIMILAR VIEW WAS STATED BY THE SPOKESMAN FOR THE POPULAR DEMOCRATIC FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF PALESTINE (PDFLP) WHO SAW THE MAIN TASK OF THE ORGANIZATION AS SUPPORTING THE PLO'S EXCLUSIVE REPRESENTATION OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE. FOOTNOTES ARE PROVIDED. (AOP)
