This Medical Screening Manual for California Law Enforcement, revised as of October 2002, presents the medical screening protocols for patrol-officer candidates that reflect recent changes in the detection and treatment of several medical conditions and include the issuance of new, state-of-the-art hearing screening guidelines, as well as significant changes to California disability statutes that went into effect on January 1, 2001.
Abstract
The chapters in the first section of the manual are intended for both physicians and hiring authorities. They provide an overview of the manual’s development and its proper use in the medical screening of California patrol-officer candidates. This section includes descriptions of the objectives that guided the revised manual’s development along with the procedures followed. It also reviews State and Federal laws that are relevant to the medical screening of patrol-officer candidates and how these laws are addressed in the manual’s examination and evaluation protocols. Also discussed in this first section are the implications of patrol-officer job demands for medical screening, followed by a presentation of general guidelines for using the manual. The second major section of the manual, which is its core, is written expressly for the screening physician. The chapters provide detailed guidance for the medical screening. Screening protocols are presented for the medical examination and evaluation of the cardiovascular system, skin conditions, the endocrine system, the gastrointestinal system, blood analysis (hematology), evaluation of a candidate with a history of tumor or malignancy (oncology), infectious diseases, musculoskeletal system, neurology, the respiratory system, vision, and hearing. The appendixes address medication-related impairment, participating medical specialists, the medical history statement, and the medical examination report.
