In November 1992, the Washington State Department of Corrections sponsored a three-day seminar for corrections officers on posttrauma response and peer support.
Abstract
The first day's agenda covered response to critical incidents, which include serious injury, death, or suicide of a colleague; any shooting or other serious threat to life of correctional officers; serious injury or death of an inmate; failed rescue situations; and any other catastrophic event or major disaster. Relevant critical incident information for emergency medical personnel described the posttrauma response process, feelings, and psychological survival tips. The second day introduced issues related to peer support, including counseling, gender and culture issue, and grief and bereavement. There was also a session in which participants discussed substance abuse. The final day's agenda covered assessment, major crisis issues, depression, suicide, and record keeping.
