This manual presents guidelines and materials for a 16-hour training course intended to introduce police officers to a crime prevention technique by teaching them about risk and resiliency factors and the skills necessary to do an initial assessment and referral for juveniles and their families.
Abstract
The training introduced an assessment checklist called Police Officers Working to Eliminate Risk (P.O.W.E.R.). The training aims to teach police officers how to assess and identify issues in the youth's life and to refer the youth to existing community resources. The training uses lecture, discussion, role playing, and practical exercises. Topics include the use of the instrument and the resource information packet, crisis response services in the school and community, community resources, techniques for approaching a family in crisis to discuss personal issues, the handling of child abuse or domestic assault, scenarios involving juveniles and the use of the instrument, and health and medical issues and services.
