Abstract
An overview of the dynamics of adolescence and the destructive impact chemicals have on this age group is presented. At-risk adolescents are discussed, with clinical vignettes included to illustrate issues to be faced when dealing with these adolescents. Effective intervention and treatment programs that have been employed with chemically dependent adolescents are noted. A specific intervention model is described that involves both school and community. Inpatient treatment for adolescents is explored, with emphasis on the need for physical recovery and nutritional concerns. Therapy options with the chemically dependent family, developmental needs of adolescents, and issues in the treatment of chemically dependent minority adolescents are addressed. Consideration is also given to a self-help approach to treatment in a day care model and to the promotion of recovery and the prevention of relapse in chemically dependent adolescents. The book concludes with a segment on the historical development and effectiveness of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. 237 references.
