Abstract
The book's introductory chapter presents an overview of illegal gambling and a history of organized crime investigation and also discusses money laundering and sports bookmaking operations. The need to get permission to investigate sports bookmaking cases is stressed. Six phases in investigating sports bookmaking operations are detailed: (1) conducting an indepth background check; (2) infiltrating sports bookmaking operations; (3) developing probable cause; (4) preparing for the raid; (5) serving the search warrant; and (6) preparing for court. Each phase involves collecting the necessary information and using appropriate investigatory techniques. The author also covers other topics relevant to illegal gambling investigations, such as receiving and validating complaints, surveillance, information leaks, covert photography, civil forfeiture, business searches, seized records, consent searches, and poker machine investigations. Investigation examples are cited, and an appendix contains six case studies. References, tables, figures, and photographs
