THE EVOLUTION OF CORRECTIONAL THOUGHT AND ORIGINS, PRESENT PRACTICES, AND SELECTION FOR PROBATION AND PAROLE.
Abstract
A HISTORY OF THE CORRECTIONAL MOVEMENT IS PRESENTED WITH DISCUSSIONS ON THE CLASSICAL, POSITIVIST, AND HUMANITARIAN SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT. THE ORIGINS OF PROBATION ARE DISCUSSED FOLLOWED BY COMMENTS ON ITS ORGANIZATION TODAY AND THE PROCESSES USED. FOLLOWING A HISTORY OF PAROLE, THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE PROCESS TODAY, PAROLE AGENCIES, SUPERVISION, REVOCATION, AND DISCHARGE. COMPARISONS ARE THEN MADE OF THE PROBATION AND PAROLE PROCESSES. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE RESEARCH ON PROBATION AND PAROLE SELECTION, CASEWORK, COMMUNITY TREATMENT PROGRAMS, AND THE CONDITIONS REQUIRED FOR PROBATION AND PAROLE. ADMINISTRATIVE CONSIDERATIONS ARE PRESENTED ALONG WITH NEW DIRECTIONS IN WHICH THESE PROCESSES ARE HEADED.
