This article examines the development and structure of the validated pre-conviction psychophysiological detection of deception (PDD) test and evaluates those procedures in light of the characteristics of other behavioral sciences testing procedures.
Abstract
The article examines the elements that place the PDD procedure in conformity with recognized testing criteria, including standardization, norm data, reliability, and validity. It makes recommendations for distinguishing test results from professional opinions. It also proposes a model that describes the elements of a pre-conviction validated PDD test and reviews the psychophysiological principles that allow any PDD test to discriminate truthful and untruthful reactions. The article examines post-conviction PDD tests in the context of those testing requirements and fundamental principles. It makes recommendations for distinguishing testing issues from the concept of mixed issues testing and describes five defined post-conviction tests that can be effectively used for sexual offenders in treatment and under conditions of supervised probation and parole.
