A SUMMATION OF EVALUATION ACTIVITIES FROM JULY 16, 1973 TO DECEMBER 6, 1974 DURING WHICH TIME 462 CORRECTIONAL TRAINEES ATTENDED THE ORIENTATION TRAINING PROGRAM OF THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
THE THREE WEEK ORIENTATION TRAINING PROGRAM'S COURSES ARE DESCRIBED. SEVERAL COMPARISONS WERE MADE BETWEEN PRE AND POST TRAINING TEST RESULTS FOR BOTH CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS AND A NON-CORRECTIONAL CONTROL GROUP. IN RELATION TO THE NON-CORRECTIONAL GROUP, CORRECTIONS OFFICERS WHO TOOK THE COURSE IMPROVED THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF SECURITY - RELATED SKILLS, COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS, AND BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION TECHNIQUES. CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS ALSO SCORED HIGH ON THE AUTHORITARIANISM SCALE. INTERESTINGLY, THOSE PERSONS WHO SCORED HIGHEST ON THE COMMUNICATIONS TEST TENDED TO HAVE LOWER AUTHORITARIANISM SCORES. A JOB SATISFACTION TEST ADMINISTERED TO COURSE GRADUATES REVEALED THAT PERSONNEL WERE DISSATISFIED WITH NEARLY ALL ASPECTS OF THEIR WORK. A TENTATIVELY POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP WAS ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE NUMBER OF GUARDS WHO HAD COMPLETED TRAINING AND LOWER INSTITUTIONAL ESCAPE RATES.
