THIS STUDY PRESENTS AN ORGANIZED BODY OF DATA USEFUL IN FORMULATING A MODEL PREDICTIVE OF VICTIM INJURY IN INCIDENTS OF RAPE.
Abstract
THE DATA REPRESENTS A WIDE RANGE OF FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE VICTIM INJURY, INCLUDING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE RAPE INCIDENT, THE TIME AND SETTING OF THE INCIDENT, AND THE PERIOD OF INTERACTION WHICH SURROUNDS THE ACTUAL OCCURRENCE. THE COLLECTION OF DATA USED IN THE FORMULATION OF A PREDICTIVE MODEL RELIES ON MENACHEM AMIR'S SITUATIONAL APPROACH, WHICH TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE PHENOMENON OF RAPE IN ITS ENTIRETY. THE STUDY INCLUDES ALL INCIDENTS OF FORCIBLE RAPE AND ATTEMPTED RAPE REPORTED TO THE NEWARK POLICE DEPARTMENT (NEW JERSEY) DURING THE 30 MONTH PERIOD BEGINNING JULY 1, 1975 AND ENDING DECEMBER 31, 1977. DURING THAT PERIOD, A TOTAL OF 916 RAPES AND ATTEMPTED RAPES WERE REPORTED TO THE POLICE (102 CASES WERE DELETED FOR PURPOSES OF THE STUDY SAMPLE). FOLLOWING PRESENTATION OF THE COMPREHENSIVE BODY OF DATA, THE ISSUE OF VICTIM INJURY IS EXAMINED. THE RESULTS OF MULTIPLE REGRESSION PROCEDURES UTILIZED TO ARRIVE AT THE DESIRED PREDICTIVE EQUATION ARE REPORTED ALONG WITH THE METHOD OF PATH ANALYSIS EMPLOYED TO FACILITATE SUBSEQUENT CAUSAL INFERENCES. AN EXTENSIVE SEARCH OF THE LITERATURE ON VICTIM INJURY IS ALSO REPORTED. CHARTS, TABULAR AND STATISTICAL DATA, AND REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. AN APPENDIX PRESENTS COMPARISONS OF THESE DATA WITH THOSE OBTAINED BY AMIR IN HIS PHILADELPHIA STUDY. (WJR)
