A LITERATURE REVIEW AND CRITIQUE OF THE MAJOR RECIDIVISM STUDIES OF THE LAST TWO DECADES, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PROBLEMS IN PREDICTION OF RECIDIVISM.
Abstract
THE PRINCIPLE SOURCES OF DATA DISCUSSED IN THIS PAPER ARE: 1) FOLLOW-UP STUDIES, IN WHICH SUBJECTS WERE FOLLOWED-UP TO DETERMINE WHETHER THEY BECAME RECIDIVISTS; 2) RETROSPECTIVE STUDIES, IN WHICH ANTECEDENT VARIABLES AMONG SAMPLES OF PRISONERS WERE EXAMINED; 3) RECIDIVISM STUDIES COMBINING THESE TWO APPROACHES; AND 4) LITERATURE REVIEWS. FOR EACH DATA SOURCE, A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SUBJECTS AND RESULTS IS PROVIDED. USING THE STUDIES REVIEWED AS A BASIS, THE AUTHORS THEN DISCUSS THE DEFINITIONS OF RECIDIVISM AND THE VARIABLES WHICH HAVE COMMONLY BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH RECIDIVISM. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
