The Queensland (Australia) Police Service has instituted an innovative police recruit training program that combines a university course and police academy component. In the future, a post-sworn component will consolidate the initial training.
Abstract
In the Queensland program, new recruits spend one semester studying towards an Advanced Certificate in Policing. The courses cover communication studies; accountability, professionalism, and ethics; legal studies and justice administration; and issues in Australian society. In addition, students are required to participate in a library skills program and basic computer keyboard skills class. The course at the police academy consists of 7 monthly modules; they are taught by academically qualified civilian and police instructors. At the academy, recruits engage in physical training; learn first aid; and become familiar with police rules, regulations, and systems. 10 notes
