This paper discusses aftercare preparation and addresses issues of prisoner preparation for release; contact with outside agencies; and interaction between prisons, probation services, and community agencies in this effort.
Abstract
Current Prison Department policy states that preparing the prisoner for subsequent release is part of the prison system services and should be performed as a joint effort of probation services and outside agencies. Services to prisoners from outside organizations are provided in an unstructured fashion with emphasis on internal or external resources varying with service provided. Issues influencing the preparation for release include the essential task list, category of the prisoner, prerelease courses, myths and stereotypes the prison world and community organizations have about each other, and available resources. Specific recommendations to improve resettlement services and interagency cooperation are given for all systems involved in the process.
