THE CHIEF OF POLICE OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA POLICE DEPARTMENT EXPRESSES HIS SUPPORT FOR THE OVERALL PROVISIONS OF H.R. 7747, WHICH INCORPORATES VARIOUS AMENDMENTS TO THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA BAIL REFORM ACT.
Abstract
TESTIFYING BEFORE THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL EFFICIENCY AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA OF THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS, THE CHIEF OF POLICE SINGLED OUT RECIDIVISM AS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE TO EFFECTIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT. HE ALSO MENTIONED OPERATION DOORSTOP AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA POLICE DEPARTMENT'S WILLINGNESS AND ABILITY TO CONTROL CRIME; OPERATION DOORSTOP IS A JOINT EFFORT OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE U.S. ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, IN WHICH A SELECT TEAM OF EXPERIENCED DETECTIVES AND PROSECUTORS CONCENTRATE THEIR EFFORTS ON IDENTIFYING AND PROCESSING THE CASES OF RECIDIVISTS WHO ARE CONSIDERED TO BE THE GREATEST DANGER TO THE COMMUNITY. HE ALSO REAFFIRMED HIS AGREEMENT WITH THE CHANGES IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA BAIL REFORM ACT WHICH HELP DETAIN DANGEROUS CRIMINALS AND PREVENT THEM FROM BEING RELEASED INTO THE COMMUNITY TO ENDANGER THE CITIZENRY. DATA ON CRIME AND RECIDIVISM RATES ARE INCLUDED.
