HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WERE RECRUITED BY MENLO PARK POLICE TO INSPECT HOMES REPOSSESSED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THAT WERE BEING RENOVATED, BUT THAT WERE INCURRING $250 TO $2500 DAMAGE FROM VANDALISM.
Abstract
A LOCAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL STAR WHO WAS A CORRECTIONS MAJOR WITH EXPERIENCE IN COMMUNITY PROJECTS WAS HIRED TO SUPERVISE THE JUNIOR INSPECTORS. TEN JUNIOR INSPECTORS WERE HIRED WHO WERE OF GOOD CHARACTER, AND STRONG PERSONALITY, AND WHO KNEW OTHER YOUTHS IN THE AREA AND LIVED CLOSE TO THE HOUSES. THE PARENTS OF THE INSPECTORS ALSO PLEDGED TO AID THE EFFORT, THE RESULT OF WHICH WAS THAT THE VANDALISM WAS CUT BY 90 PERCENT AND POLICECOMMUNITY RELATIONS WERE IMPROVED.
