THIS ARTICLE FOCUSES ON THE PRESSURES CONFRONTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL AND HOW THESE PRESSURES AFFECT THEIR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR WIVES AND CHILDREN, AS WELL AS THE DIFFICULTIES SUBSEQUENTLY ENCOUNTERED.
Abstract
A DISCUSSION OF THE EMOTIONAL TOIL THAT OCCURS IN MARITAL RELATIONSHIPS, THE EFFECTS ON SPOUSES, THE PRESSURES AND DIFFICULTIES CONFRONTING THE COUPLE, AND SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR HANDLING THESE STRESSES ARE ALL EXPLORED. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT, EVEN MORE THAN FOR MOST RELATIONSHIPS, COMMUNICATION IS AT THE CORE OF A SUCCESSFUL LAW ENFORCEMENT MARRIAGE. SUGGESTIONS FOR INCREASING COMMUNICATION INCLUDE: ORIENTATION FOR ENTERING CADETS AND FOR THEIR SPOUSES, WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS FOR WIVES AND HUSBANDS TOGETHER AND SEPARATELY THROUGHOUT THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREERS, AND THE AVAILABILITY OF DEPARTMENT PSYCHOLOGISTS FOR CONFIDENTIAL COUNSELING.
