RESULTS OF A STUDY CONDUCTED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE PRETRIAL RELEASE AND PRETRIAL DETENTION CHARACTERISTICS OF NEW YORK CITY FELONY DEFENDANTS, USING DATA FROM 151 CASES IN MANHATTAN DURING NOVEMBER 1975.
Abstract
THE STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON THE LENGTH OF DETENTION; PROPORTION OF DEFENDANTS RELEASED; THE EFFECT OF BAIL AMOUNT ON DETENTION TIME; THE EFFECT OF DETENTION OR RELEASE ON DISPOSITION TIME; DISTRIBUTION OF RELEASE BY CHARGE SEVERITY AND NATURE OF THE OFFENSE; AND FREQUENCY OF RELEASE BY CHARGE CATEGORIES. THE DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM THE COURT RECORDS OF 151 CASES ARRAIGNED IN MANHATTAN BETWEEN NOVEMBER 10 AND 23, 1975 WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY WENT FROM THE CRIMINAL COURT TO THE STATE SUPREME COURT. THE RESULTS ARE DIVIDED INTO FOUR NARRATIVE SECTIONS, WHICH ARE SUPPLEMENTED BY TABLES OF RELEVANT DATA. THESE ARE TIME IN DETENTION, BAIL AND CASH ALTERNATIVES, DETENTION AND INITIAL SUPREME COURT ACTION, AND RELEASE TYPE. SEVERAL OTHER TABLES ARE APPENDED....EB
