In a survey of urban midwestern adolescents, 12% of the females and 2% of the males said that they had been raped or sexually assaulted. Contrary to the results of previous studies, rape was equally prevalent among all racial and ethnic groups and at all social class levels.
Abstract
Although rape victimization was significantly related to father absence, lack of religious upbringing, and membership in a sexually active peer group, the above relationships were very slight. Therefore, it is concluded that the characteristics of the victim have little to do with rape and explanations of rape should focus on the offender. (Author abstract
