DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES ENGAGED IN BY SCHOOL POLICE SCHOOLPOLICE-COURT TEAMS OPERATING UNDER THE AUSPICES OF LEAA GRANT TO LANE COUNTY, OREGON JUVENILE DEPARTMENT.
Abstract
EACH TEAM, COMPOSED OF A SCHOOL COUNSELOR, A POLICE JUVENILE OFFICER, AND A JUVENILE COURT COUNSELOR, PURSUED A SET OF SELF-DETERMINED PROJECTS WITH THE GENERAL GOAL OF PREVENTION OF ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR IN THE YOUTH POPULATIONS OF THE SOUTH AND BETHEL SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE EUGENE, OREGON, METROPOLITAN AREA. THE LONG-RANGE FOCUS ON PREVENTION WAS EXPRESSED IN VARIOUS, MORE WORKABLE SHORT-TERM OBJECTIVES SUCH AS IMPROVEMENT OF INTERAGENCY COMMUNICATION, DEVELOPMENT OF OMBUDSMAN FUNCTIONS FOR STUDENTS, AND PROVISION OF RESOURCES FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND AGENCY STAFFS FACED WITH THE PROBLEMS OF YOUTH. AN OUTLINE FOR EVALUATIVE TRACKING OF PROJECT ACTIVITIES WAS DEVELOPED TO HELP MAKE EXPLICIT THE PURPOSES, METHODS, PARTICIPANTS, TIME SCHEDULES, AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES OF THE VARIOUS SUB-PROJECTS DESIGNED BY TEAM MEMBERS. A TEAM ACTIVITY LOG WAS DEVELOPED FOR USE BY THE BETHEL SCHOOL DISTRICT TEAM. DATA FROM A PRE- AND POST-EXERCISE WERE USED TO ASSESS IMPACT OF A PARENT EDUCATION PROGRAM ON PARTICIPANTS IN THE SOUTH SCHOOL DISTRICT. TWO QUESTIONNAIRES (FOR SCHOOL STAFF AND FOR STUDENTS) WERE ANALYZED FOR INDICATIONS OF TEAM VISIBILITY, EFFECTIVENESS, AND METHODS OF OPERATION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
