This set of training materials is designed for use in an eight-part workshop that focuses on how staff of substance abuse treatment programs can help prevent AIDS among substance abusers.
Abstract
Workshop topics include the reasons substance abuser workers must be involved in AIDS prevention, ways to remove barriers to becoming involved, the theory of prevention education, and targeting AIDS prevention to substance abusers. Other topics include the symptoms and risk factors for AIDS, risk reduction measures, the development of effective prevention education for specific groups, issues and decisionmaking in antibody testing, the conduct of a risk assessment interview, health promotion planning, and the development of action plans for AIDS prevention. The materials for each unit include a list of objectives, a content outline with time requirements for each topic, lists of materials, suggested activities for participants, and text covering each topic. Visual aids and a participant's manual that includes text, content outlines, self-assessment instruments, and reprints of journal articles.
