This set of training materials is designed for use in a 10-part workshop that focuses on the use of community outreach programs to prevent AIDS among intravenous drug users who are not in treatment and among their sex partners.
Abstract
The packet includes a trainer's manual, a participant's manual, and printed copies of overhead projections. The 3-day workshop covers the following topics: the nature of the outreach population, barriers to outreach efforts, the nature and prevention of HIV infection, issues and decisionmaking regarding HIV antibody testing, the theory of prevention education, methods of targeting AIDS prevention to drug users, methods of forming linkages with human services agencies and staff, appropriate street behavior, strategies for dealing with difficult situations, the need for personalized education, ways addicts can handle the crises of their everyday lives, and recordkeeping and reporting. The guidelines include lists of materials, content outlines, lists of time requirements, instructional guidelines, and background information. Forms for the completion of exercises for participants, reprints of journal articles, and related materials are included.
