TWELVE MONTH FOLLOW-UP OF EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL GROUPS OF JUVENILES REFERRED FOR BEING BEYOND PARENTAL CONTROL AND RUNAWAY.
Abstract
THE SACRAMENTO PROJECT, INITIATED IN 1970, IS AN EXPERIMENT DESIGNED TO TEST WHETHER JUVENILES CHARGED WITH THIS KIND OF OFFENSE CAN BE HANDLED BETTER THROUGH SHORT TERM FAMILY CRISIS THERAPY AT THE TIME OF REFERRAL THAN THROUGH JUVENILE COURT PROCEDURES. THE INITIAL REPORT HAD INDICATED THAT THE PROJECT CASES COMMITTED FEWER DELINQUENT ACTS THAN THE CONTROL GROUP. IN ORDER TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE RESULTS CONCERNING RECIDIVISM WOULD HOLD UP OVER A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME WITH A LARGER NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS. THIS SECOND REPORT PRESENTS A FOLLOW-UP ON ALL CASES HANDLED DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF THE PROJECT AND FOLLOWED FOR 12 MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF INITIAL HANDLING. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT RECIDIVISM RATES FOR PROJECT CASES WERE LOWER THAN FOR CONTROL CASES, AND THAT COURT PROCESSING WAS NECESSARY IN FEWER OF THE PROJECT CASES. STATISTICS ALSO INDICATE THAT COSTS FOR HANDLING CASES, DETENTION, AND PLACEMENT WERE LOWER FOR THE PROJECT SAMPLE. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS DATA ON PROJECT CASE CHARACTERISTICS.
