EXPERIMENTAL PROJECT IN WHICH JUVENILE STATUS OFFENDERS ARE HANDLED THROUGH SHORT-TERM FAMILY CRISIS THERAPY RATHER THAN THE TRADITIONAL PROCEDURES OF THE COURT.
Abstract
THE UNIT STAFF CONSISTS OF SPECIALLY TRAINED COUNTY PROBATION PERSONNEL. WHEN A REFERRAL IS RECEIVED, THE PROJECT STAFF ARRANGES A FAMILY SESSION TO DISCUSS THE JUVENILE'S PROBLEM. CONFINEMENT OF THE YOUTH AS A MEANS OF SOLVING PROBLEMS IS DISCOURAGED AND A RETURN HOME WITH A COMMITMENT BY ALL TO TRY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM IS ENCOURAGED. DURING THE FIRST NINE MONTHS OF OPERATION, THE PROJECT RESULTED IN A DRAMATIC DECREASE IN JUVENILE COURT ACTIONS, A LOWERING OF THE RECIDIVISM RATE FOR JUVENILE STATUS OFFENSES AND CRIMINAL CONDUCT, AND LARGE SAVINGS IN THE COST OF PROCESSING INDIVIDUAL CASES.
