This report describes the Staffordshire Police Activity and Community Enterprise (SPACE) program in Great Britain, which provides activities for over 25,000 youths for part of July and the whole month of August in an effort to increase positive activities for that age group at risk for delinquency during the summer holiday period.
Abstract
Although the program is open to all youth aged 10-16, a special effort is made by the police to recruit juveniles with delinquency records and youth who live in high-crime areas. Police officers supervise the activities with the intent of developing positive relationships between themselves and the young participants. Activities include sports games, fishing, carnivals, hikes, camping, ice skating, and swimming. This report examines the possible effect of SPACE on juvenile crime rates in the county and its impact on police-public relations. The program was found to be popular with the general public and with juveniles, and there is evidence that the program reduces juvenile crime in the county during August.
