This booklet is intended to assist schools and communities in confronting and eliminating harassing, intimidating, violent, and other hate-motivated behavior among youth.
Abstract
It is intended to promote discussion, planning, immediate action, and long-term responses to hate crime. By understanding what hate-motivated behavior is and how best to respond to it, schools can become powerful forces in eliminating such incidents. After reviewing the prevalence of hate crime, the booklet notes that America's students are increasingly diverse in race, ethnic backgrounds, and cultures, requiring students to learn to interact with peers significantly different from themselves. The booklet outlines the elements of effective school-based hate prevention programs. Topics covered include staff training, the structuring of age-appropriate school activities that target hate prevention, development of partnerships with the community, creation of a hate-prevention policy for distribution, development of corrective actions for those who violate school hate prevention policies, collection and use of data, and the provision of structured opportunities for integration. Examples of school hate prevention programs are described, followed by a list of resource organizations, web page addresses, and a 38-item bibliography.
