A conference on preventing youth suicide, sponsored by the Australian Criminology Institute, addressed issues of what causes the phenomenon of youth suicide, which has been increasing in Australia in recent decades, and what practical preventive measures can be taken.
Abstract
These conference papers discuss trends in youth suicide in several Australian states including Tasmania, New South Wales, and Western Australia. Risk factors and the prediction of suicide are covered. Innovative school, community, and clinical prevention programs are described and the roles of police, teachers, counselors, psychiatrists, nurses, custodial officers, and the family in evaluating and assisting young people are explored. Finally, several program options concerning suicide survivors and their family are examined. Chapter references
