Testimony before the House Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families focuses on ways to prevent alcohol abuse as a factor in family crises.
Abstract
A range of alcohol abuse prevention methods are discussed by researchers; Federal and local government administrators; representatives from advocacy groups, the alcohol industry, and the National Association of Broadcasters; and counselors, parents, and a high school student. Some of the preventive approaches discussed include tighter control of alcohol availability, particularly for juveniles; community and school-based alcohol abuse education; and a combination of regulatory and education measures. Representatives of the Entertainment Industries Council describe council efforts to use the entertainment industry to deglamorize alcohol and drug use. The administrator of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention reports his office's activities in attempting to prevent alcohol abuse among juveniles. Witnesses focus particularly on how to combat the marketing efforts of the alcohol industry, which promotes the drinking of alcoholic beverages any time and any place. Prepared statements, letters, and supplemental materials are included.
