The Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General and the Executive Office of Elder Affairs sponsored a conference in 1992 that focused on the changing demographics of the elderly population and people with disabilities and the need to protect these individuals from abuse and neglect.
Abstract
The conference's keynote address provided an overview of empowering elders and people with disabilities. Subsequent presentations considered the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to caring for the needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities, money management, hospital protocols for abuse and neglect cases, and community-based approaches to preventing crimes and violence against seniors. Other presentations addressed public awareness and community education, law enforcement and protective service protocols, the Americans With Disabilities Act, health care decisionmaking and models, emergency respite and housing options, and the media's responsibility in empowering elders and people with disabilities. The text of the Americans With Disabilities Act is included. References, tables, and figures
