Both management and design of the living environment are important in preventing petty crime.
Abstract
The environment can serve as a barrier for the potential offender of petty crime. Physical and social barriers can be distinguished. Physical barriers, such as closing off semi-public places, can prove successful, yet will help little if the offenders live in the same flatblock. In this case, and in general, social barriers are of great importance. Van der Voordt and Van Wegen (1991) identify four kinds of social barriers: "eyes on the street," resident involvement, visibility, and attractiveness. These barriers can be combined with appointing people to perform repair, cleaning, and social tasks. Other aspects of management that require attention include allocation and eviction policies to improve the social climate in an area. 1 table and 6 references
