This manual on a comprehensive approach to youth drug education (including alcohol) contains state-of-the-art prevention and early intervention programs that involve schools, parents, and the community.
Abstract
The manual first presents questions and answers on teenage alcohol use and abuse, followed by definitions associated with major strategies for alcohol and drug abuse prevention. The model presented for classroom education is a program for kindergarten through the 12th grade entitled, 'Here's Looking at You, Two,' a program developed in Seattle, Wash. The program provides information and teaches children coping skills and self-concepts designed to prevent alcohol and drug abuse. The manual outlines the curriculum and provides practical guidelines for teacher training and course presentation for the various age groups. CASPAR, an alcohol education program used in Massachusetts with grades 3-12, is also described. The parent education program presented in the manual is suitable for use with 'Here's Looking at You, Two.' It guides parents in reinforcing and expanding on prevention education provided in the classroom. The STARR community program described in the manual uses a variety of community-based prevention approaches which involve a wide range of citizens, agencies, and institutions in alcohol and drug education. The early intervention programs presented are designed to identify students abusing alcohol and other drugs and provide appropriate counseling in a school setting. The concluding chapter of the manual guides school administrators in the development of alcohol and drug policies conducive to the prevention of drug abuse. Appended model risk reduction programs and prevention ideas. 38-item bibliography, and sample resources.
