This analysis of drug prevention research concludes that although several successful prevention approaches have been identified, research is needed to refine these strategies and determine how they achieve their effects, which are best for specific developmental stages, and which are most effective over the long term.
Abstract
The misuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs is a problem with serious health and social consequences worldwide. The causes of this misuse are complex and multifaceted. Risk factors include biological, psychological, social, familial, and community factors. Prevention research has revealed that successful prevention interventions are those that appropriately target these factors in individuals at risk and overcome them by enhancing individuals' resilience and providing them with protective factors. Further empirical research is needed to determine which strategies work effectively and efficiently and under which circumstances interventions can be effectively applied. 9 references (Author abstract modified)
