Based on papers and discussions from a March 1988 national conference, this monograph discusses the State and Federal roles in drug and alcohol abuse prevention, prevention research perspective, school-based and community-based prevention programs, health promotion, and public policy prevention programs.
Abstract
Among the topics discussed are the current areas of need in the prevention field, the questions researchers are asking and the areas of overlap, and whether there are answers from current prevention research. Other issues considered are future research needs; limitations for research questions, strategies, techniques, and findings, and limitations in applying research findings in the practical setting. Discussions of school-based prevention programs include consideration of a statewide evaluation system for such programs, the theory and implementation of the social-influence model of primary prevention, and challenges to prevention programs in schools. Other topics cover the design of prevention research as a collaborative relationship between citizens and social scientists as well as the social stress model of alcohol and other drug abuse as a basis for community-based prevention.
