Counselors, also referred to as mental health specialists, are in a unique position to make a valuable contribution to the prevention and early identification of substance abuse; with knowledge of counseling and assessment skills, counselors are well equipped to make significant observations that may lead to stronger prevention programs.
Abstract
Because counselors do not always have the necessary knowledge and skills to deal effectively with substance abuse, this self-instructional course is designed to increase the confidence of counselors through education so they are better able to assess, plan, and implement substance abuse prevention activities. The course has four units: (1) roles and attitudes and the scope of substance abuse problems; (2) concept of primary prevention of substance abuse; (3) substance abuse screening and assessment; and (4) counselor's role in primary prevention of substance abuse. In addressing early indications of risky or problematic behaviors, counselors can encourage people to live drug-free lifestyles, emphasize the disadvantages of substance abuse, encourage health promotion, and refer clients for further treatment. 45 references
