THE IDEOLOGICAL JUSTIFICATIONS AND RATIONALES OF PRICE TAG SWITCHERS ARE DISCUSSED - MOST DENY THAT THEIR CRIME HAS A VICTIM, OR, IF THEY ACKNOWLEDGE A VICTIM, THEY BELIEVE IT IS A DESERVING VICTIM.
Abstract
PRICE TAG SWITCHING IS VIEWED BY OFFENDERS AS LESS SERIOUS, EASIER, AND HARDER TO PROVE THAN SHOPLIFTING. IT BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN OUTRIGHT THIEVERY AND PURCHASE. THE VICTIM-MERCHANT IS SEEN AS DESERVING THE LOSS BECAUSE THE PRICE MARKUPS ARE THOUGHT TO BE UNJUST.
