Abstract
Data encompass demographic characteristics and conviction offenses of those entering and leaving prison, sentence lengths for those admitted to prison in States with determinate and indeterminate sentencing, and time served in prison and jail for various offenses. Data show that more than 93 percent of those admitted or released were male. Approximately 54 percent of those admitted or released were white; 45 percent, black. Almost one-fifth of admittees were parole violators. The median sentence was 36 months; median time served by releasees was 19 months. Approximately one-third of releasees had previously served prison time for a felony. During the year, 768 persons with life sentences left prison in 21 reporting States. 16 tables.
