THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES PRISON CONDITIONS, REHABILITATION PRACTICES, AND CONJUGAL VISITING IN MEXICAN PRISONS AND CURRENT RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS OF CONJUGAL VISITING AND COED PRISON PROGRAMS IN THE UNITED STATES.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR BELIEVES THAT CONJUGAL VISITS AND COED PRISON ENVIRONMENTS ARE VALUABLE IN MAINTAINING FAMILY STABILITY AND EMOTIONAL STABILITY AMONG INMATES. SUCH CONSIDERATIONS ARE IMPORTANT IN PROMOTING REHABILITATIVE GOALS AND IN FACILITATION READJUSTMENT TO SOCIETY. THE MEXICAN EXPERIENCE IS SAID TO INDICATE THAT SUCH POLICIES COMPENSATE MORE THAN ADEQUATELY FOR PRIMITIVE FACILITIES. OVERALL RESISTANCE TO SUCH POLICIES IN THE UNITES STATES IS SAID TO RESULT FROM GENERAL IGNORANCE ABOUT THE NATURE AND EFFECTS OF SUCH POLICIES, AND A DETERMINATION TO RETAIN THE PUNITIVE ASPECTS OF CORRECTIONS., EVEN AT THE EXPENSE OF REAHBILITATION.
