THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE IMAGE PROJECTED BY ONE CANADIAN PRISON AND ATTEMPTS TO EXTRAPOLATE THE POSSIBLE REPERCUSSIONS OF THIS INSTITUTION ON THE INMATE, THE STAFF, AND THE INTERACTION BETWEEN INMATES AND STAFF.
Abstract
THE IMPACT ON INTERNAL REFORM, THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND SOCIETY AS A WHOLE IS ALSO CONSIDERED. THE SERIES OF DEPRIVATIONS AND ISOLATION SUFFERED BY INMATES, THE LACK OF PERSONAL INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN GUARDS AND INMATES CAUSED BY AN EMPHASIS ON INTERNAL SECURITY AND INMATE SURVEILLANCE, AND THE RESULTANT MECHANIZATION OF THE GUARD FUNCTION TO THAT OF A 'TURN-KEY' ARE ALL CITED. EFFORTS TO COUNTERACT THESE EFFECTS ARE SUGGESTED, INCLUDING AN ACTIVE PROGRAM TO ASSIST PRETRIAL DETAINEES IN RETAINING THEIR COMMUNITY LINKS BY KEEPING THEM SEPARATE FROM SENTENCED OFFENDERS AND PRERELEASE PROGRAMS FOR THE SOON-TO-BE RELEASED INMATE. IT IS NOTED THAT ALTHOUGH PRISON REFORM IS ADVOCATED, CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS MUST STILL FULFILL THE ROLES DICTATED TO THEM BY THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, WHICH LEAVES SOCIETY TO WORK FOR CHANGES IN THE SYSTEM, SUCH AS A MOVE TOWARDS LOCAL AND COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS. --SUMMARY IN ENGLISH....ELW
