In the French prison, the canteen provides diverse consumer goods inmates are allowed to buy with their own money.
Abstract
During the 19th century, the entrepreneur who owned the canteen provided the goods inmates needed to survive. Today the prison provides all of the essentials for survival apart from the canteen goods. The canteen, however, offers goods that enhance the inmates' lives and relieves the harshness of prison life. Formerly, French prison staff believed a prison could only run smoothly by sacrificing rehabilitative inmate benefits. Today prisons are managed to facilitate improved relations between inmates and correctional officers. The canteen is one means for doing this. (Author summary modified)
