Abstract
ON APRIL 1, 1967 A GRANT WAS AWARDED BY OEO FOR THE PURPOSE OF DEMONSTRATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRAM IN A MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON. IN 1970 THE NEW GRANT WAS AWARDED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON. THE PROGRAM INSIDE THE OREGON STATE PENITENTIARY HIGHLIGHTS A COLLEGE PREP CURRICULUM, PREPARING THE STUDENT FOR A REGULAR UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. ADDITIONAL SERVICES OFFERED INCLUDE GROUP THERAPY AND PERSONNEL COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE. BENEFIT OF THIS PROGRAM IS THE STUDY RELEASE CENTER, AN INITIAL STEP FROM PRISON TO CAMPUS. IT IS A FRATERNITY-TYPE FACILITY NEAR THE CAMPUS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, AND IS SUPERVISED BY GRADUATE STUDENTS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF A WORK RELEASE REPRESENTATIVE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
