Prison construction in the United States has reached $6.8 billion, but the rate of increase is down.
Abstract
Fifty of fifty-two Federal and State systems responded to a 1991-1992 construction survey conducted early in 1991. They reported approximately $6.8 billion being allocated for new facilities or additions. This amount appears to be a leveling off from the large jump reported by the survey of 1989-90. Data on prison construction for 1991-92 in 50 States, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and 13 Canadian systems are presented in the following categories: (1) Number of facilities; (2) Funding source; (3) Capacity, security level; (4) Estimated cost of construction; (5) Estimated cost per bed; (6) Estimated date of completion; (7) Estimated annual operating costs; (8) Facilities completed in last 2 years (construction time, number of beds). There is a chart of contracts for private prisons in 1991-92 for five states and one Canadian system. The chart contains information on facilities constructed, security level, number of beds, and cost to State.
