DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR ONGOING COEDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AT THE NEW MEXICO PENITENTIARY, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE COLLEGE CREDIT PROGRAM OF THE COLLEGE OF SANTA FE; REPORT ALSO DESCRIBES AN EVALUATIVE CONFERENCE ON EDUCATIONAL ISSUES.
Abstract
THE NEW MEXICO PENITENTIARY (NMP), WHOSE FACILITIES ARE BRIEFLY REVIEWED IN THE REPORT, SPONSORS FOUR MAJOR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS: A VOCATIONAL PROGRAM, AND ADULT BASIC EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVELS, A COLLEGE PREPARATORY PROGRAM WHICH INCLUDES COUNSELING SUPPORT (PROJECT NEWGATE) AND A COLLEGE CREDIT PROGRAM LEADING TO ASSOCIATE AND BACCALAUREATE DEGREES FOR INMATES AND PAROLEES. THE LAST PROGRAM NAMED IS OFFERED BY THE COLLEGE OF SANTA FE. THIS REPORT ALSO COVERS THE DISCUSSIONS AND DELIBERATIONS OF 65 PROFESSIONALS AND LAYPERSONS AT A CONFERENCE ON PRISON EDUCATION HELD IN SANTA FE IN MAY 1975. SOME OF THE TOPICS EXAMINED WERE THE RESPONSE TO THE COLLEGE OF SANTA FE PROGRAM, THE PAROLE BOARD'S VIEW OF EDUCATION AS REHABILITATION, FUTURE DIRECTIONS FOR COURSE CONTENT EMPHASIS, SOCIETAL IMPLICATIONS OF A BROADLY BASED LAW EDUCATION PROGRAM, AND THE ROLE OF TECHNICAL-VOCATIONAL PRISON EDUCATION. THE APPENDIXES INCLUDE, FOR REFERENCE, THE LEGISLATION ENACTED IN ILLINOIS WHICH MADE THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT.
